Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish and now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl.
The rules are simple:
- Each Tuesday, Jana assigns a new topic. Create your own Top Ten list that fits that topic – putting your unique spin on it if you want.
- Everyone is welcome to join but please link back to That Artsy Reader Girl in your own Top Ten Tuesday post.
- Add your name to the Linky widget on that day’s post so that everyone can check out other bloggers’ lists.
- Or if you don’t have a blog, just post your answers as a comment.
This week’s Top Ten Tuesday topic is Books I Was Assigned to Read in School. I’m way too old to remember that, although I do recall working my way slowly through John Milton’s Paradise Lost for my MA. Instead, I’ve picked some schools that appear in books or plays. I hasten to add most of them are not from my era! Links from each title will take you to the book description of Goodreads.
- Brookfield Grammar School in Goodbye Mr. Chips by James Hilton
- Hillsover School in What Katy Did at School by Susan Coolidge
- Carne School in A Murder of Quality by John le Carré
- Rugby School in Tom Brown’s Schooldays by Thomas Hughes
- Kiplington High School for Girls in South Riding by Winifred Holtby
- Dotheboys Hall in Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens
- Marcia Blaine School in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark
- Malory Towers in First Term at Malory Towers by Enid Blyton
- Albion House in Forty Years On by Alan Bennett
- Linbury Court Preparatory School in Jennings Goes to School by Anthony Buckeridge

Good idea – I haven’t done this week’s yet but I might do it later!

I don’t think I’ve read any of these books before, although I have wanted to read Mallory towers for years now. I’ve read a lot of Charles Dicken’s books, but I’ve never heard of Nicholas Nickleby. I should read that some time.

Good topic. I LOVED Goodbye, Mr Chips–I even liked the movie versions. Yes, even the cheesy musical-ish one

I love your take on this! I think the only one I’ve read from your list is Goodbye, Mr. Chips. I may have read What Katy Did at School too, although I can’t remember.

Fun twist on the topic! There are SO many books set in schools these days, especially books for children and teens, which makes sense since that’s where they spend so much of their time. Even as an adult, I enjoy reading books set in schools.
Happy TTT!

Yes, I suppose I really should have included Hogwarts for the younger generation but – confession – I have never read any of the Harry Potter books.

I like your twist on the topic. I definitely struggled with my list this week because it’s been a hot minute since I was in school, but I managed to remember some books at least. I hope you have a great week.

I like how you interpreted this week’s topic. I’ve not read any of these books. They sound interesting though.
