Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish and now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl.
The rules are simple:
- Each Tuesday, Jana assigns a new topic. Create your own Top Ten list that fits that topic – putting your unique spin on it if you want.
- Everyone is welcome to join but please link back to That Artsy Reader Girl in your own Top Ten Tuesday post.
- Add your name to the Linky widget on that day’s post so that everyone can check out other bloggers’ lists.
- Or if you don’t have a blog, just post your answers as a comment.
This week’s Top Ten Tuesday topic is Books with a High Page Count in which Jana invites us to ‘share those doorstop books!‘ These days I’m a wimp when it comes to tackling big books (which for me is anything over 500 pages) but here are some I’ve read. Links will take you to my review.
- The Mirror and the Light by Hilary Mantel (912 pages)
- The Labyrinth of the Spirits by Carlos Ruiz Zafon (832 pages)
- The Rose Code by Kate Quinn (656 pages)
- The Secret History by Donna Tartt (629 pages)
- Macbeth by Jo Nesbo (624 pages)
- Sword of the War God by Tim Hodkinson (608 pages)
- The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne (575 pages)
- The Square of Sevens by Laura Shepherd-Robinson (560 pages)
- Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz (552 pages)
- A Place Without Pain by Simon Bourke (518 pages)
What are the biggest books you’ve read? Do you love diving into a big book or view it with trepidation?

We have two in common. I have John Boyne on my list and Hilary Mantel.

John Boyne’s not very popular at the moment is he because of the Polari Prize controversy…

I must get back to the Square of Sevens!

So many great authors and diverse genres here, Zafón, Quinn, Horowitz 🙂
I’ll pick The Rose Cose, thank you 🙂 Historical Fiction with strong female characters.

Over the years I’ve read loads over 400 pages. I think the longest was Child of the Phoenix by Barbara Erskine at 950 pages. In the last few years I would suggest the following
1 Mirage by Camilla Lackberg 551. In fact the whole trilogy of Cult and Trapped
2 Cold Truth by Toni Anderson 506
3 Hidden Nature by Nora Roberts 431
4 Concealed in Death by JD Robb 402
5 Atlas by Harry Whitaker and Lucinda Riley 763
6 Essex Dogs by Dan Jones 432
7 Overboard by Sara Paretsky. 432

I found it easy to get stuck into long books (800 pages +) when I was younger. I just don’t seem to have the appetite for it these days. Maybe it’s because a lot of big books now are fantasy and that genre doesn’t appeal to me.

Yes, they did seem to have more long books in the past. I don’t mind if they’re fairly well paced. I do read a fare bit of fantasy or sci-fi

I used to love big books, but not so much anymore!
Loved The Rose Code and the books that I read by Carlos Ruiz Zafon.

Same here. I have a couple of big books left in my TBR pile but I can’t see myself adding any more.

I really enjoyed The Rose Code. I haven’t yet read her latest The Briar Club. Have you read it?

No, I haven’t yet but I’ve seen positive reviews.

It was and almost as violent as Shakespeare’s version. I started the Game of Thrones series years ago but never got past book 2.

Some big books don’t seem long once you’re into them. Unfortunately the opposite can be true…

I get intimidated when I see big books. Which is funny, because I used to read them with no problem. I think getting more into audiobooks has been a godsend, because that’s how I read Rose Code. If I had tried reading a physical copy, I probably wouldn’t have started it. Ebooks are another great way to read big books.

I’m exactly the same. Devoured big books when I was younger. Oh dear, perhaps it’s about the passing years and not feeling you can make that time investment any more… I’ve been turning to audiobooks as well to tackle big books.

Of these, I’ve only read The Secret History, but that’s a favorite of mine. I need to read something by Hilary Mantel.

I can recommend the Wolf Hall trilogy but be prepared for a big investment of time.

The Rose Code made my list, and the Hearts Invisible Furies almost did, but I only put books over 600 pages on my list.

I love historical fiction, but I’ve yet to read a Kate Quinn book. I really need to remedy that one of these days!
Happy TTT!

The only one I’ve read on your list is Gone With the Wind and that was years ago. I lent my copy to someone and never got it back!

I knew The Rose Code was long, but it certainly didn’t feel long when I read it. Others are also mentioning The Frozen River, but again, it didn’t feel long to me. If a book is really well written, it never feels like a long read.

I agree. And conversely some shorter books can feel long!
