Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish and now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl.
The rules are simple:
- Each Tuesday, Jana assigns a new topic. Create your own Top Ten list that fits that topic – putting your unique spin on it if you want.
- Everyone is welcome to join but please link back to That Artsy Reader Girl in your own Top Ten Tuesday post.
- Add your name to the Linky widget on that day’s post so that everyone can check out other bloggers’ lists.
- Or if you don’t have a blog, just post your answers as a comment.
This week’s topic is Movies/TV Shows That Would Have Made Amazing Books, a topic suggested by Sabrina at Notes From a Paper Plane Nomad. It’s a neat twist on the topic ‘books that have been made into films’ but, not for the first time recently, it had me stumped, not least because I don’t watch that much TV or many films. So my list is made up of some of my favourite film adaptations of books. You’ll note that a lot of these are older versions – I’m not a great fan of remakes!
- The Cruel Sea (1953) based on the novel by Nicholas Monsarrat
- Jane Eyre (1943) based on the novel by Charlotte Brontë
- Rebecca (1940) based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier
- The Remains of the Day (1993) based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro
- Scrooge (1951) based on A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
- Great Expectations (1946) based on the novel by Charles Dickens
- Carol (2015) based on The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith
- To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) based on the novel by Harper Lee
- The Man Who Never Was (1956) based on the book by Ewen Montagu
- Ice Cold in Alex (1958) based on the novel by Christopher Landon
I also think the Alastair Sim version of Christmas Carol is the best one as well, Cathy.

Thanks, that’s several votes for this one. I have to admit I also have a soft spot for the musical version with Albert Finney but definitely NOT A Muppet Christmas Carol which seems to be so many people’s favourite!

My kids like that version, but because of the grandkids.

To Kill a Mockingbird and The Remains of the Day are two that I thought were excellent.

Absolutely agree. I still want Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins to get together at the end of The Remains of the Day – as their characters, not in real life obviously. If I was Emma I’d definitely stick with Greg Wise.

I don’t think I’ve seen any of these films, but I do tend to prefer older versions of classics to modern remakes in many cases.

I can only think they keep on remaking films in order to cast modern actors who are more well known to the viewing public. Of course, it could also be because they’re just such great stories!

Maybe someone could write a modern-day version of these. That might also be fun.

Scrooge (1951) is my favorite adaptation of that story.

Yes to Scrooge! Gosh it’s such an amazing movie, one of the best!
Oh gosh I had no idea there was a film version of Great Expectations. Thank you for sharing, I need to watch it now since it’s my favourite book!
