The Saxon Wolves by Penny Ingham (ebook, review copy courtesy of the author and Rachel’s Random Resources)
Britain 455AD – The Roman Empire has fallen. As the daughter of a king and a priestess of the sacred grove, Anya’s life in Germania is one of wealth and privilege – until she dares to speak out against the high priest’s barbaric human sacrifices. Her punishment is exile.
Forced to leave her homeland, she sails to Britannia, to an island that is sliding into chaos and war, as rival kingdoms vie for power. Alone and far from home, Anya must learn to survive amidst the bloodshed, treachery and intrigue of fifth century Britain. Can she find a place to belong – a home, a hearth, a welcome?
Stories We Tell Ourselves by Sarah Françoise (paperback)
Frank and Joan’s marriage is in trouble. Having spent three decades failing to understand each other in their unfinished house in the French alps, Joan’s frustrations with her inattentive husband have reached breaking point. Frank, retreating ever further into his obscure hobbies, is distracted by an epistolary affair with his long-lost German girlfriend. Things are getting tense. But it’s Christmas, and the couple are preparing to welcome home their three far-flung children.
The children, though, are faring little better in love themselves. Maya, a gender expert mother-of-two, is considering leaving her family and running off with a woman; Wim is considering leaving his girlfriend; and Lois, who spends her time turning war documentaries into love poems, is facing a change of heart.

Blog posts
Monday – I was honoured to kick off the blog tour for Once Upon A River by Diane Setterfield, a book I absolutely loved as will be evident from my review.
Tuesday – The Top Ten Tuesday topic was Cozy/Wintry Reads and my list included some books suitable for cold winter nights and, in contrast, some books to conjure up thoughts of long summer evenings. I also hosted a slot on the blog tour for Sadie’s Wars by Rosemary Noble, sharing my review of the third in the author’s ‘Currency Girls’ series. I also published a Q&A with Ian Ross as part of the blog tour for Triumph in Dust, the latest book in his ‘Twilight of Empire’ series.
Wednesday – WWW Wednesday is the opportunity to share what I’ve just read, what I’m currently reading and what I plan to read next…and have a good nose around to see what other bloggers are reading. Another blog tour and another review, this time for historical novel, The Blue by Nancy Bilyeau.
Thursday – I (finally) published my review of Paris Echo by Sebastian Faulks which, I confess, I admired but struggled with in parts – hence the delay in writing the review!
Saturday – I shared my review of a book I read for Nonfiction November, Christmas at War by Caroline Taggart.
As always, thanks to everyone who has liked, commented on or shared my blog posts on social media this week.
