As I’m spending a few days in Falmouth in Cornwall, What Cathy Read Next has a Cornish theme this week. I’ll be sharing reviews of books set in Cornwall and also listing some of the many books set in this part of the world.
The theme of my first list is historical fiction novels set in Cornwall. Click on the book title to find the description on Goodreads.
Wrecker by Noel O’Reilly
The Magpie Tree by Katherine Stansfield
Poldark by Winston Graham
The Cornish Dressmaker by Nicola Pryce
The Rose Garden by Susanna Kearsley
False Lights by K. J. Whittaker
The Daughter of River Valley by Victoria Cornwall
The Camomile Lawn by Mary Wesley
China Court by Rumer Godden
The Stranger by Kate Riordan
Do you have a favourite book set in Cornwall or have you read any of the books mentioned above?

Daphne Du Maurier’s books (Frenchman’s Creek is historical, also the King’s General, Jamaica Inn)- Enid Blyton’s Malory Towers school stories-book 2 especially highlights the Cornish cliffs.

I have a post dedicated to Daphne’s books later this week but I never knew about the Malory Towers connection with Cornwall so thanks for that info 😁

Mrbooks beat me to Malory Towers. I read at least one of them while on holiday in Cornwall as a child. I’ve read Jamaica Inn, but didn’t enjoy it, and three or four of the Poldark novels.

I think I’ve read a few more of the Poldark series but the later ones didn’t hold my attention as much. The Ross and Demelza ones are the best to my mind. On reflection, I’m not sure I’ve read Jamaica Inn – or if I did it must have been many years ago. Definitely have a copy on my bookshelves though…

I think Jamaica Inn probably suffered because I’d seen the film not long before I read the book and there was very little in common between the two.

I quite enjoyed Jamaica Inn- but I think I liked Frenchman’s Creek a little better.

I’m fairly sure I haven’t read Frenchman’s Creek.

It’s fun. Do pick it up. The adaptation with Tara Fitzgerald was enjoyable as well.

Great list, Cathy! I have read Ross Poldark, The Rose Garden and most of du Maurier’s books. One of my favourite historical fiction novels set in Cornwall which hasn’t already been mentioned here is Penmarric by Susan Howatch.

The three that appeal the most to me are: “The Rose Garden”, “The Magpie Tree”, and “The Stranger”. One of my favorite books of all time is set in Cornwall. It is “The Shell Seekers” by Rosamunde Pilcher.
