What I’m Currently Reading
I’m reading The Two Roberts on my Kindle, a physical copy of crime novel The Dark Isle and I’m listening to the audiobook of Tombland (the last two both books on my 20 Books of Summer 2025 list).

The Two Roberts by Damian Barr (Canongate via NetGalley)
He will stay like this forever, Robert’s arm draped round him. They will be forever twenty.
Scotland, 1933. Bobby MacBryde is on his way. After years grafting at Lees Boot Factory, he’s off to the Glasgow School of Art, to his future. On his first day he will meet another Robert, a quiet man with loose dark curls – and never leave his side.
Together they will spend every penny and every minute devouring Glasgow – its botanical gardens, the Barras market, a whole hidden city – all the while loving each other behind closed doors. With the world on the brink of war, their unrivalled talent will take them to Paris, Rome, London. They will become stars as the bombs fall, hosting wild parties with the likes of Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon and Elizabeth Smart. But the brightest stars burn fastest.

The Dark Isle by Clare Carson (Head of Zeus) #20BooksOfSummer25
Sam grew up in the shadow of the secret state. Her father was an undercover agent, full of tall stories about tradecraft and traitors. Then he died, killed in the line of duty.
Now Sam has travelled to Hoy, in Orkney, to piece together the puzzle of her father’s past. Haunted by echoes of childhood holidays, Sam is sure the truth lies buried here, somewhere.
What she finds is a tiny island of dramatic skies, swooping birds, rugged sea stacks and just four hundred people. An island remote enough to shelter someone who doesn’t want to be found. An island small enough to keep a secret…

Tombland by C. J. Sansom (Mantle) #20BooksOfSummer25
Spring, 1549. Two years after the death of Henry VIII, England is sliding into chaos.
The nominal king, Edward VI, is 11 years old. His uncle, Edward Seymour, Lord Hertford, rules as Edward’s regent and Protector. In the kingdom, radical Protestants are driving the old religion into extinction, while the Protector’s prolonged war with Scotland has led to hyperinflation and economic collapse. Rebellion is stirring among the peasantry.
Matthew Shardlake has been working as a lawyer in the service of Henry’s younger daughter, the lady Elizabeth. The gruesome murder of one of Elizabeth’s distant relations, rumored to be politically murdered, draws Shardlake and his companion Nicholas to the lady’s summer estate, where a second murder is committed.
As the kingdom explodes into rebellion, Nicholas is imprisoned for his loyalty, and Shardlake must decide where his loyalties lie – with his kingdom, or with his lady?
What I’ve Just Read
The Body in the Ice by A. J. MacKenzie (Zaffre) #20BooksOfSummer25
The Summer House Party by Caro Fraser (Head of Zeus)

What I’ll Be Reading Next

The Predicament by William Boyd (Viking via NetGalley)
Gabriel Dax, travel writer and accidental spy, is back in the shadows. Unable to resist the allure of his MI6 handler, Faith Green, he has returned to a life of secrets and subterfuge. Dax is sent to Guatemala under the guise of covering a tinderbox presidential election, where the ruthless decisions of the Mafia provoke pitch-black warfare in collusion with the CIA.
As political turmoil erupts, Gabriel’s reluctant involvement deepens. His escape plan leads him to West Berlin, where he uncovers a chilling realisation: there is a plot to assassinate magnetic young President John F. Kennedy. In a race against time, Gabriel must navigate deceit and danger, knowing that the stakes have never been higher . . .

Every time I see mention of a Shardlake book I’m reminded there will be no more and I’m sad all over again. Hope you’re enjoying it!

Ha! Yes! The longest one in the series if I remember correctly. Worth the time though.

I’m hoping to read The Two Roberts soon.

Interesting looking books there.
I have failed in my 20 Books of Summer Challenge. I would quite like to get at least 10 done by the end of the year but with only 5 done it looks bleak.
Have a great week!

I’ve just finished no. 7 and I might be able to squeeze in another but no more than that, I think. I like to stick to my original list – so stubborn! – and I’m always over optimistic about what’s achievable. On the plus side, I’ve read some good books that have been sitting on my bookshelf for years. I hope you enjoyed the 5 you have read.

That’s good! It’s getting tight! I can’t believe how close we are to the end of summer! I always think that 10.is easy but then I get sidetracked!
Same. Once I’ve set something I like to stick to it too!
They were good 😊
