Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish and now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl.
The rules are simple:
- Each Tuesday, Jana assigns a new topic. Create your own Top Ten list that fits that topic – putting your unique spin on it if you want.
- Everyone is welcome to join but please link back to That Artsy Reader Girl in your own Top Ten Tuesday post.
- Add your name to the Linky widget on that day’s post so that everyone can check out other bloggers’ lists.
- Or if you don’t have a blog, just post your answers as a comment.
This week’s topic is Books I’m Worried I Might Not Love as Much the Second Time Around. Unfortunately I rarely re-read books so instead I’m referencing Reading Ireland Month 2024 which is taking place this month and is hosted by my namesake Cathy at 746 Books. Sadly I can’t take part myself because of too many other commitments but in the off-chance you can, here are ten books by Irish authors you might want to try. Some are in my TBR pile, some are books I’ve read. Links from each title will take you to my review or the book description on Goodreads.
- Dr Copernicus by John Banville
- Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan
- All the Broken Places by John Boyne
- Shadowplay by Joseph O’Connor
- Leonard and Hungry Paul by Rónán Hession
- House of Names by Colm Tóibín
- This Is Happiness by Niall Williams
- The Spinning Heart by Donal Ryan
- Old God’s Time by Sebastian Barry
- The Well of Saint Nobody by Neil Jordan

Ten great choices Cathy, I loved Shadow Play and The Spinning Heart.

I was lucky enough to go to a recording of BBC Radio 4’s Bookclub and listen to Donal Ryan talk about the book. It’s on BBC Sounds if you’re interested.

I’ll check that out for sure, he’s such a warm speaker.

He was fab and very funny (although not all of that would have made the broadcast version). It was fascinating to be at the recording. They record 50 minutes of Q&A – it’s not broadcast live, thank goodness as otherwise I’d never have the courage to ask a question! -and then the producer has the difficult job of editing it down to around 27 minutes.

I heartily second reading anything by Claire Keegan this month.

Oh, good point. Small Things Like These is one I might make an exception for.

I love the Irish spin to your post this week, Cathy! Very cool.
Small Things Like These was excellent, and I’ll bet the rest of them were, too.
Thank you for stopping by earlier.

I’ve never heard of Reading Ireland Month, but it sounds fun! I loved Maeve Binchy’s books and am still so sad about her death 😦
Happy TTT!

These are all new to me, but the cover of Dr Copernicus looks very intriguing.

I have several John Banville books on my bookshelf – all unread unfortunately – but I picked that one for the cover.

Good list–very timely for those wanting to join in now or get a second or third book in!

I haven’t read any of these books or authors, but I do like to feature certain genres or authors or books in seasonal kind of lists like this. It’s a great topic to feature this time of year. 🙂 Thanks so much for visiting my website today!

Amazingly, I’ve never read a single one of your books this week! I don’t know how that’s possible – you have some very well known books there that I have been meaning to read for years – but there we are! I have read one other Donal Ryan book, and it was a very interesting experience. Definitely felt like it captured Ireland on the page!

I did not know that there was a Reading Ireland Month challenge! I feel like it’s a bit too late for me to participate, but thanks for the list! I’d still love to read some of these books outside of the challenge and your list seems like a great place to get inspiration from!

It was a bit late for me too so this was the best I could do to support it. Maybe next year…

I’m not familiar with any of these books, and the only author on the list that I’m familiar with is Claire Keegan. I love when people share books and authors that others may not be familiar with.
