Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish and now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl.
The rules are simple:
- Each Tuesday, Jana assigns a new topic. Create your own Top Ten list that fits that topic – putting your unique spin on it if you want.
- Everyone is welcome to join but please link back to That Artsy Reader Girl in your own Top Ten Tuesday post.
- Add your name to the Linky widget on that day’s post so that everyone can check out other bloggers’ lists.
- Or if you don’t have a blog, just post your answers as a comment.
This week’s topic is Things That Make Me Instantly Not Want To Read A Book. Please note this is intended to be lighthearted and I mean no disrespect to authors whose books match these criteria (with the exception of no. 4) or to readers who would have to be physically restrained from purchasing books in the following categories.
- Books with pink covers
- Books with dogs or cats on the cover (Apologies, cynophiles and ailurophiles)
- Books with “Mummy” in the title
- Anything “written” by Nadine Dorries
- Memoirs by people I’ve never heard of but it’s assumed I should have done
- Books with stickers that won’t peel off or, even worse, books with pre-printed stickers that make you feel stupid when you try to peel them off, especially if it’s in front of other people
- Any book described as “unputdownable” (What, not even to visit the loo?)
- Books claiming to be “the book everyone’s talking about” (I bet they’re not)
- Books described as “laugh out loud” (I’m not joking, don’t promise what you can’t deliver)
- A book that weighs more than your weekly grocery shop
What are your instant book turn offs?

Haha! I didn’t do it this week as I wasn’t sure I’d come up with ten but your list is good. One of mine would be covers with sad orphans or women in a shipyard, you know the kind of thing 😄

I agree with pretty well all of these, Cathy, but most emphatically with your fourth reason!

You’ve never taken a book to the loo with you? I have 😳.
Things that put me off : animal abuse, romance, covers with half naked men/women on them and I definitely try to stay awake from the “twist you won’t see coming” thing because 9 out of 10 you really do and from miles away … but sometimes I’m just weak.
Thanks for the chuckle, Cathy.

Books with long prologues. By that I mean more than two pages.

I couldn’t agree more
Great post! I really enjoyed reading your list of things that make you instantly not want to read a book. I completely agree with you on books with pre-printed stickers that won’t come off – they drive me crazy! My question for you is, have you ever given a book a chance despite it having one of these instant turn offs and ended up enjoying it?

I’m with you on most of these (who is Nadine Dorries?), and with #2 – I’d include cartoon parrots and birds in gilded cages to the list.

She’s a British Conservative MP who is an admirer of Boris Johnson, even after all that’s happened. He appointed her as Culture Secretary, probably as a joke to annoy lefties like me.

Oh, I know all about PMs appointing ministers for the sole purpose of pissing off lefties!

I love this list Cathy. I shy away from books with sexy men “groping” women on the cover.

And they all seem to be the same sexy man!
