#BookReview 5 Star Books I’ve Read So Far This Year

Book loveI’ve read some fabulous books so far this year and we’re not even halfway through 2023 yet. Some of the following will definitely be contenders for inclusion in my favourite books of the year list. Links from the titles will take you to my full review.

  1. Bellatrix by Simon Turney (Aries) – ‘another completely immersive journey back in time for fans of action-packed, richly detailed and fast-paced historical fiction’
  2. The English Führer by Rory Clements (Zaffre) – ‘If you’re a fan of historical thrillers that combine espionage with adventure then they don’t come better than this’
  3. The Emperor’s Shield by Gordon Doherty – ‘Action-packed, assured, thrilling’ historical adventure
  4. Old God’s Time by Sebastian Barry (Faber & Faber) – ‘a truly brilliant piece of writing … proof that a novel doesn’t have to be big to deliver a powerful punch’
  5. Three Gifts by Mark A. Radcliffe (epoque press) – ‘a beautifully written, gentle and heartfelt story’
  6. The Chosen by Elizabeth Lowry (rivverrun) – ‘Emotional, intimate, moving’ historical novel shortlisted for the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction 2023
  7. The Monk by Tim Sullivan (Head of Zeus) – ‘a skilfully crafted and ingenious crime novel with a really engaging protagonist’
  8. The House of Doors by Tan Twan Eng (Canongate) – ‘wonderful descriptive writing… absolutely brilliant’
  9. The Scarlet Papers by Matthew Richardson (Michael Joseph) – ‘Gripping, ingenious, fast-paced spy thriller’

What have been your standout books so far this year? Do you agree with any of my choices?

  1. I haven’t read any of these ones. Three of my favourites are Preloved by Lauren Bravo, The House That Made Us by Alice Cavanagh and Ancestry by Simon Mawer.
