The What’s In A Name Challenge is being hosted again for 2023 by Andrea at Carolina Book Nook. I managed to complete the 2022 challenge with just a few days to spare.
The challenge runs from 1st January to 31st December 2023. You can sign up at any time but can only count books you read between those dates. Read a book in any format (hard copy, ebook, audio) with a title that fits into each category. (Andrea has provided some examples for each category on the challenge sign-up page.) You can’t use the same book for more than one category but creativity in matching the categories is not only allowed, it’s encouraged! You can choose your books as you go or make a list ahead of time.
I’ve made some provisional selections below, deliberately picking books that have been languishing in my TBR pile for way too long. Links from the title will take you to the book’s entry on Goodreads. Once I’ve read them, I’ll replace this with a link to my review.
It’s a really fun challenge, so why not sign up to take part yourself?
Punctuation Mother‘s Boy by Patrick Gale
7 Deadly Sins Appetite by Philip Kazan
You or Me My Mother’s Shadow by Nikola Scott
Chess Piece The Shadow King by Maaza Mengiste
Celebration The Last Party by Clare Mackintosh
Q, X Z Bellatrix by Simon Turney

I’ve never much been into book challenges, because they can take away the spontaneity of choosing whatever you fancy to read next. But this looks much more accessible and I’ll take part. My Z has already popped its head over the parapet and demanded to be included: Zorrie, by Laird Hunt. I hope you enjoy the Patrick Gale as much as I did: it was one of my favourite reads of 2022.

Thanks, I never choose books just to fit a challenge – well, I don’t think I have done! – I just hope something will pop up during the year that fits the bill.

Well, that’s rather the way I’m going to look at it too. Let’s see what pops up on the TBR pile!

You know, this one looks pretty easy. I might do this one too! But I’m not going to plan ahead, just hope for the best!

Oh, now that I look at it, I already have 2023 ARCs for a few of these categories. Yes, I think I’ll try this one next year!
