#TopTenTuesday Beloved Book Phrases

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish and now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl.

The rules are simple:

  • Each Tuesday, Jana assigns a new topic. Create your own Top Ten list that fits that topic – putting your unique spin on it if you want.
  • Everyone is welcome to join but please link back to That Artsy Reader Girl in your own Top Ten Tuesday post.
  • Add your name to the Linky widget on that day’s post so that everyone can check out other bloggers’ lists.
  • Or if you don’t have a blog, just post your answers as a comment.

WordsThis week’s topic is Favourite Words. I decided to stick to a bookish theme and take a humorous look at phrases often used (possibly overused?) in relation to books.

Remember that word – humorous.

  • Unputdownable (what, you literally never put it down – not even to visit the bathroom or make a cup of tea?)
  • A twist you won’t see coming (but probably will now)
  • The book everyone’s talking about (my old mum isn’t)
  • Epic (you might finish it by Christmas… next year)
  • The number 1 bestseller (for about ten minutes on Amazon in a very niche category)
  • The best book I’ve ever read (I’ve told you a million times not to exaggerate)
  • The long-awaited (Publisher: I wish this author would write more quickly)
  • As seen on TikTok (by people too young to go out on their own)
  • As seen on Instagram (I remember the cute cat/scented candle/artfully arranged flowers, don’t recall what the book was about)
  • Longlisted for the [insert name of] Prize (‘Close, but no cigar’)

Please note: No publishers or reviewers were knowingly ridiculed in the creation of this post.

  1. Thanks for this Cathy – my biggest bugbear is the ‘twist you won’t see coming’. I think most of these phrases are now so overused they should be redundant as they don’t really mean anything anymore.

  2. I love this twist, Cathy. Yes, these are words I see all too often, I might have used some in my reviews, 😁 I did get a good chuckle.
