Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish and now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl.
The rules are simple:
- Each Tuesday, Jana assigns a new topic. Create your own Top Ten list that fits that topic – putting your unique spin on it if you want.
- Everyone is welcome to join but please link back to That Artsy Reader Girl in your own Top Ten Tuesday post.
- Add your name to the Linky widget on that day’s post so that everyone can check out other bloggers’ lists.
- Or if you don’t have a blog, just post your answers as a comment.
This week we’re invited to pick a thing – anything from a colour to a place, an animal or a font – and feature books which have that thing on the cover. I’ve chosen boats.
Fled by Meg Keneally
Every Man For Himself by Beryl Bainbridge
Slow Boats to China by Gavin Young
Dark Tides by Philippa Gregory
The Cruel Sea by Nicholas Monsarrat
Traitor by David Hingley
The Yellow Admiral by Patrick O’Brian
Voices in the Garden by Dirk Bogarde
The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway
The Sea for Breakfast by Lillian Beckwith

Boats is a lovely idea for a theme!

I’ve only read The Old Man and the Sea but that could be because I don’t like to be on a boat. They can be stylish to look, at but I have a deep phobia of falling over and drowning (also getting motion sickness doesn’t help!)

I was forced to read it when I was school and didn’t really appreciate it. I’ll admit I bought this copy purely for the beautiful, pristine dust jacket.

This was a great theme! Yeah, I don’t see a lot of contemporary books with boats on their covers. It’s nice to see them, though. 🙂

Fun! I love reading about maritime disasters and big ships like Titanic, Lusitania, etc., so boats on covers definitely appeal to me. They signify excitement, adventure, danger, etc. You never know what can happen on a boat trip (which is why I avoid them, ha ha)!
Happy TTT!

Love your idea too!

Boats! It makes me think of Salt to the Sea, but I think that actually just has a flotation device on it.

Yes, there were titles I thought of to do with the sea that didn’t have boats on them!

Very cool topic. Someone else chose boats too but the books you are showcasing are different.

Great choice Cathy. So many different kinds of boats as well.

My husband would love all of these covers. He’s a sailor and love anything to do with boats, as long as it’s not a motorboat, lol. My favorite of your choices is Slow Boats to China because of the colors.
