Six on Saturday is a weekly meme hosted by The Propagator. If you’d like to join in you can find more details here.
Here are six things that have given me pleasure or had me looking forward to brighter days in the garden this week.
1) Continuing last’s week theme of neglected fruit bushes, I thought this gooseberry bush [right] was dead but it is showing a few signs of life so I’ve been trying to clear the weeds from around it without disturbing the roots. I think the variety is Invicta.
2) This pretty pink primula [left] has somehow made itself at home in the middle of the lawn although it has been rather nibbled by something.
3) This rosemary bush [right] is thriving and has been flowering for a couple of months now despite the fact I cut it back quite hard which you’re not usually advised to do.
4) [Below, left] The blossom is really starting to come through now on the damson tree. I spotted a peacock butterfly on it yesterday but wasn’t quick enough to grab a picture.
5) [Below, right] For all its gay yellow flowers and red-tinged leaves, I find mahonia a bit of a thug. The garden’s previous owner obviously had a liking for them as there are several – usually in the most inconvenient places. This one has sent its roots under a concrete path and is currently resisting my attempts to remove it. And don’t get me started on the rampaging hebes…
6) [Bottom] Currently four of the six tomato seeds I planted have germinated with signs of one more since I took the picture. The variety is Chocolate Cherry.
Enjoy your garden or outside space this week.

We have a shrub that we’ve been wanting to get rid of. My stepmother-in-law attacked it rather fiercely three years ago. We thought for sure that’d be the end of it but nope, it’s still here. Only even bigger than before. 😄
Love the pink primula. Just having that little bit of colour this early in the season makes such a difference. Even if it’s popping up somewhere you’ve not planted it.

Pretty blossom on your Damson. I’m not too keen on the Mahonia either. The spiky leaves are a menace, but then it does offer flowers for pollinators during the winter.

What happy garden updates! My tomatoes also started this week, but my rosemary has never looked that good.

I’m envious of people who can grow things. I just can’t – even plastic plants die on me!
