I saw this challenge on the blog of Cleo at Cleopatra Loves Books, who came across it on the blog of Nicki at the Secret Library Book Blog, who it turn saw it on Books and Me, who got it from Kristin Kraves Books, who got it from….well, you get the idea. We bloggers love to share!
Challenge Rules: Find a book on your bookshelves that contains (either on the cover or in the title) an example for each category. You must have a separate book for all 20, get as creative as you want and do it within five minutes – or longer if you have way too many books on way too many overcrowded shelves!
I couldn’t resist joining in but, typically perhaps, I made it more difficult for myself by deciding to restrict my choice to only my collection of John Buchan books. Regular followers of this blog will know I’m a big fan of John Buchan’s writing. I’ll freely admit it took me more than the stipulated five minutes and I had to be a little creative (euphemism for ‘cheat’) in some of the categories. However, it was a lovely excuse to dust off (literally in some cases) books from my collection.

1 – Food – John Macnab (cover: that deer will soon become roast venison)
2 – Transportation – Mr. Standfast (cover: Hannay escapes from yet another moving train)
3 – Weapon – Salute to Adventurers (cover: a sword)

4 – Animal – The Island of Sheep
5 – Number – The Thirty-Nine Steps
6 – Something you Read – Augustus (struggling a bit here but that’s a book on the cover isn’t it?)

7 – Body of Water – Sick Heart River
8 – Product of Fire – The Power-House
9 – Royalty – A Prince of the Captivity
10 – Architecture – A Lodge in the Wilderness
11 – Item of Clothing – Greenmantle (cover: turban)
12 – Family Member – A Winter Bouquet (OK, a little creative here but it’s by Susan Tweedsmuir who was John Buchan’s wife)
13 – Time of Day – The Courts of the Morning
14 – Music – The Dancing Floor (well who dances without music?)
15 – Paranormal Being – Witchwood
16 – Occupation – The Free Fishers
17 – Season – Midwinter
18 – Colour – The Man Who Was Greenmantle (pushing it here but Buchan did write about Aubrey Herbert, “I drew Sandy in Greenmantle from him”)
19 – Celestial Body – The Moon Endureth
20 – Something That Grows – Memory-Hold-The-Door

Aha so that explains why it took you longer than 5 minutes! 😀

Thanks although I was cursing myself part way through. There were books spread everywhere afterwards…

Brilliant! And very inventive. I’ve done this too, but never thought of limiting it to just one author – I’m tempted to try it with Agatha Christie’s books …

Agatha Christie would be brilliant as she was so inventive with her titles.
