Hello, my name is Cathy. I’ve loved reading for as long as I can remember. What Cathy Read Next was born in 2016 as a way for me to share my thoughts about the books I’ve read with a wider audience. Since then I’ve published thousands of reviews of historical fiction, literary fiction and crime fiction along with author interviews, book excerpts and guest posts. My absolute favourite genre is historical fiction but what I crave above all is wonderful writing.
I have an MA in English from the Open University and wrote my dissertation on John Buchan, one of my favourite authors. When I’m not immersed in a book, browsing the shelves of a bookshop or planning a visit to a literary event, you’ll probably find me tending my wildlife-friendly garden.

Review Policy
I pride myself on writing detailed reviews that are thoughtful and constructive as I respect the effort that goes into writing a book. I share my reviews on Facebook, X, Instagram and Bluesky. I am a NetGalley reviewer with an 97% feedback ratio. I do not charge for reviews. Where I have received a review copy from an author or publisher this will be stated in my review. Regardless of whether I have purchased a book myself or received a review copy, my review will be my honest opinion. Where purchase links are provided it will clearly state if this is part of an affiliate programme.
How to request a review
Authors – If I’ve worked with you before, for example I’ve reviewed one of your books, then I am happy to consider review requests.
If I’ve not worked with you before, I regret I’m unable to accept review requests at the present time. However if your book is in a genre I read, I am happy to consider publishing a guest post, extract or Q&A.
Publishers – I am happy to consider review requests for books in the following genres: historical fiction, literary & contemporary fiction, crime/mystery/thriller (but nothing gory or violent), short story collections and some nonfiction (history, biography, nature, travel)
I do not read children’s or Young Adult books, erotica, humour, horror, fantasy or poetry.
